Simplifying Data Access for Better Patient Experience:
Best Practices and Implementation Toolkit for Providers
Facilitating Patient Access to Health Data
Introduction
The Sequoia Project launched the Consumer Engagement Strategy Workgroup in March 2024 with a singular mission in mind: to make it easier for patients and consumers to access and use their health data.
It doesn’t take extraordinary investments in new infrastructure, staff, or technology. What it takes is a shift in perspective. By deploying well established principles of product and web user experience design, providers and their technology vendors can refocus their approach to serving patients on issues related to data use and access and drastically reduce unnecessary burdens.
Our draft Simplifying Data Access for Better Patient Experience: Best Practices and Implementation Toolkit for Providers outlines these best practices, including sample design and text, to help patients and consumers. The Sequoia Project is seeking public and stakeholder feedback on this draft until April 2, 2026. The workgroup will reconvene to disposition all feedback, finalize the recommendations, and promote industry adoption of the toolkit.
